IMF chief says worst of financial crisis is over

The worst of the financial-sector crisis is over, although the impact on the broader economy will likely drag on in coming months, International Monetary Fund (IMF) managing director Dominique Strauss-Kahn said on Thursday. "There are good reasons to believe that the largest part of disclosure in financial institutions has been done," he said.

Nationwide employees face financial woes

Employees of Nationwide have been left financially stranded because of technical issues surrounding the liquidation of the airline, the United Association of South Africa (Usasa) union said on Wednesday. A Uasa divisional manager said the difficulties arose because the Nationwide group consists of four subsidiaries.

Imperial considers insurance merger

Africa’s biggest transport and logistics company, Imperial Holdings, said on Monday it was considering a merger of its Regent Life and Regent Insurance companies. ”A merger would enhance the growth prospects and operational synergies of these businesses …,” the company said in a statement.

ANC denies summit talks on removing Mbeki

The South African Communist Party, an ally of the African National Congress (ANC), called at a weekend summit for President Thabo Mbeki to be sacked, newspapers said on Saturday, but the ANC said the issue was not even on the agenda. ANC spokesperson Tiyani Rikhotso dismissed any suggestion that Mbeki’s political future was being discussed.

Sexwale welcomes US removal of ANC from blacklist
