Zuma calls for end to alliance tension

African National Congress (ANC) president Jacob Zuma on Friday called for a closure of the ”chapter of tension and mistrust” between the ruling party and its alliance partners. The relationship between the ANC and its alliance partners had become somewhat strained under the previous leadership of national President Thabo Mbeki.

US lawmakers debate Bill to remove stigma of ANC

Lawmakers on Tuesday debated legislation to remove former South African president Nelson Mandela and the African National Congress (ANC) from an apartheid-era United States terrorist blacklist. Barbara Lee, a California Democrat, recalled that ANC members could travel to United Nations headquarters in New York but not to Washington DC or other parts of the United States.

SA seeks new laws to fight terror financing

South Africa’s fight against money laundering and terrorism financing needs tough new laws to close regulatory loopholes and give authorities more power to crack down on crime. Murray Michell, the head of South Africa’s Financial Intelligence Centre, said draft laws would also help unclog an overburdened judicial system and streamline oversight.

ANC says wants senior Zuma ally in Cabinet

The African National Congress (ANC) has asked President Thabo Mbeki to appoint its deputy president to Parliament as a first step to getting him into the Cabinet, an ANC official said on Tuesday. ANC deputy president Kgalema Motlanthe, a left-leaning intellectual and ally of ANC leader Jacob Zuma, has been touted as a compromise presidential candidate.
