A Jacob Zuma-led African National Congress will have a major impact in KwaZulu-Natal, analysts and politicians in the province said on Friday. They agreed the ANC’s popularity in the province would increase at the expense of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) if Zuma was elected the party’s new leader in Polokwane next week.

In an eleventh-hour appeal before the African National Congress’s (ANC) national conference starts on Sunday, President Thabo Mbeki on Friday urged delegates to remain faithful to the party’s revolutionary goals. The ANC’s in-house electoral commission says it is not investigating a single complaint brought to its attention. Bertha Gxowa, chairperson of the electoral commission, said the commission did not receive any complaints “within its competency”. The commission’s job is to ensure the nomination and voting process at the Polokwane conference runs smoothly.

The African National Congress (ANC) must make the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people a ”living reality” at its upcoming national conference. The Lesbian and Gay Equality Project and the Triangle Project will send an open manifesto demanding these rights to the ANC ahead of the conference.

The Public Service Accountability Monitor (PSAM) has expressed ”dismay” at the African National Congress’s (ANC) succession debate focusing on the personalities of President Thabo Mbeki and ANC deputy president Jacob Zuma. ”The PSAM believes that debate should be refocused on the protection of civil and political rights,” it said.

Libyan leader Moammar Gadaffi, who has proved an awkward guest for Nicolas Sarkozy, described his visit to France as "historic" and condemned terrorism after a second meeting with the president. Gadaffi told France 24 television in an interview he saw it as "an opening to have relations with Europe. It’s historic."
