Legislation relating to judicial conduct and ethics was unanimously approved in the National Assembly on Tuesday. Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development Brigitte Mabandla said recent controversial incidents regarding alleged indiscretions by members of the judiciary had highlighted the lack of a credible legal framework.

State workers join rail strike in France

Pressure from the street against French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s programme of reforms intensified on Tuesday as hundreds of thousands of state employees went on strike, joining a week-long stoppage by rail workers. Teachers, postal staff, nurses, air-traffic controllers, tax officials and other civil servants staged a one-day protest.

ANC NEC to meet ahead of December conference

A special meeting will be held before the African National Congress’s (ANC) 52nd annual conference in December, the party said on Monday. ”The NEC [national executive committee] agreed to hold a special meeting before the conference to further discuss issues for inclusion in the NEC’s report to conference,” ANC spokesperson Smuts Ngonyama said.

World finance leaders gather in Kleinmond

Finance ministers and central bank governors from the world’s largest economies gather in Kleinmond in the southern Cape this weekend for a meeting of the Group of 20 countries. The event is described by Finance Minister Trevor Manuel as probably the most significant gathering of economic policymakers seen to date in South Africa.
