Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga has urged striking teachers to respect their colleagues who chose not to get involved in the strike.
Wednesday saw an ”uneven” resumption of teaching at Soweto schools following last week’s disruptions, said Gauteng education minister Barbara Creecy.
The Johannesburg Labour Court on Tuesday declared a protest by teachers’ union Sadtu in Soweto schools illegal, the Gauteng education department said.
About 1 200 teachers and support staff went without their salaries at the end of April, the Gauteng education department said on Wednesday.
Gauteng is ahead of schedule to host next year’s Confederations Cup and the 2010 World Cup finals, it was announced on Thursday.
Thousands of refugees in and around Johannesburg faced another night filled with anxiety on Tuesday evening as xenophobic tensions and violence continued to spread through the province. The violence has so far claimed 24 lives and left up to 10Â 000 people seeking refuge in shelters across Gauteng.
As police announced the launch of "specialised units" to combat the deadly xenophobic violence in Gauteng and the National Intelligence Agency confirmed that it was probing the violence, the government on Tuesday stood accused of serious policy failures that "created a tinderbox of unmet expectations which exploded in Alexandra".
The police have ”concrete evidence” of a suspected third-force involvement in xenophobic attacks in and around Johannesburg, the Gauteng Legislature heard on Tuesday. ”The police now have concrete evidence of those involved in orchestrations and they are dealing with it,” said Gauteng’s minister for sport Barbara Creecy.

The Soccer City Stadium is 50% complete and will be finished in May next year, five months ahead of the Fifa deadline, Gauteng Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation minister Barbara Creecy said on Wednesday. An independent state of readiness audit had shown that the province was ”firmly on track” to meet its commitments for the 2010 Fifa World Cup.
