Blue Bulls coach Frans Ludeke said his team attained their goal by reaching the Currie Cup final after flyhalf Morne Steyn steered them to victory.
The Bulls may have provided a foretaste of the international season ahead when they beat New Zealand’s Waikato Chiefs 61-17 on Saturday.
The Bulls will know by about 11.30am on Friday what they have to do the next day against the Sharks to head the Super 14 log for a home semifinal.
Only the Bulls are certain of competing in this season’s play-offs as the Super 14 series builds to a climax in next weekend’s final regular round.
The Bulls face their toughest challenge of the Super 14 when they host the high-flying Chiefs at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Saturday.

Makhaya Ntini remains the undisputed champion of the people after he was voted South Africa’s most popular sportsman for 2007. In a poll undertaken by BMI Sport Info, Ntini emerged at the top of the list, ahead of Bafana Bafana and Blackburn Rovers striker Benni McCarthy and world Cup-winning Springbok wing Bryan Habana.

There seems to be little sympathy at SA Rugby for World Cup-winning Springbok coach Jake White’s unhappiness that he was not considered for the shortlist of four from which the next Springbok coach will be appointed. White, in Tuesday’s press conference, pointed out he had a clause in his contract that states he has the right to negotiate an extension of his contract.

Three yellow cards, two of them on the advice of the touch judges, played a huge part in the Absa Currie Cup final played at Vodacom Park in Bloemfontein on Saturday, which saw the Free State Cheetahs beat the Lions 20-18. The Cheetahs, with the victory, retained their hold on the Currie Cup that they had shared with the Blue Bulls in the 2006 final.

The Free State Cheetahs advanced to the Absa Currie Cup rugby final against the Lions when they beat the Blue Bulls 11-6 in Bloemfontein on Saturday. The soggy underfoot evened out the odds, with the Cheetahs running on as favourites after losing only one of their 14 league matches.
The stakes will be raised considerably this weekend as the Absa Currie Cup premier division enters its semifinal stage. The two semifinal clashes are the highlight of a bumper weekend on the local rugby calendar that also includes the promotion/relegation play-offs.
