Finance Ministry calls for tips for Trevor

The Finance Ministry has invited all South Africans to send their tips to the "Tips for Trevor" campaign about what they would like to see included in next month’s national budget. According to the ministry’s spokesperson, Lindani Mbunyuza, the campaign is run throughout the year and the tips received assist the minister in understanding public sentiment.

Kallis, Prince steer SA to victory

Jacques Kallis and Ashwell Prince steered South Africa to a series-clinching five-wicket win over Pakistan on the third day of the third and final Test at Newlands on Sunday. Kallis (51) and Prince (59 not out) came together when South Africa were wobbling at 39-4 in their quest for a target of 161 on a tricky pitch.

Muggers hit Kirstenbosch

Knife-wielding muggers have again struck above Cape Town’s world-famous botanical gardens, the media reported on Sunday. Seven hikers in two separate groups became the latest victims near Kirstenbosch on Saturday, bringing to 14 the number of people mugged in the area in the past nine days.

Santos did neighbours Ajax Cape Town a favour on Friday evening at the Athlone Stadium when they beat Silver Stars 2-0 after leading 1-0 at the interval in their Premier Soccer League encounter. The win keeps Ajax at the top of the log, one point ahead of Stars.

Pakistan battle back against SA

Pakistan fought back after a first-innings collapse on the first day of the series-deciding third and final Test against South Africa at Newlands on Friday. South Africa were 131-5 at the close of play in reply to Pakistan’s 157 all out. Mohammad Yousuf saved Pakistan from total embarrassment, hitting more than half his team’s runs before being last man out.

Leon: SA avoids human rights issues

South Africa’s United Nations vote on Burma earlier this month is not an anomaly in its human rights record under the Mbeki presidency, Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Tony Leon said on Friday. ”It is consistent with a larger pattern in which South Africa, through its deeds, if not words, eschews human rights issues,” he said.

Skinstad out of retirement for Super 14

Former Springbok captain Bob Skinstad was confirmed in the Sharks’ Super 14 squad as SA Rugby announced its five squads for the southern-hemisphere provincial rugby tournament on Thursday. Skinstad has not played serious rugby since 2003, but has come out of retirement in a bid to win a place in the Springbok World Cup squad.

Smith has ‘gripes’ with ICC over Gibbs ban

South Africa captain Graeme Smith criticised the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Thursday after an appeal by Herschelle Gibbs against a two-Test ban was turned down. Charges against kulula hoax ‘bomber’ withdrawn

Bellville prosecuting authorities on Wednesday withdrew charges against a bomb hoaxer on board a kulula.com flight out of Cape Town. Alberton stock controller Barend Griffin (26) had joked that he had a bomb in a carton that contained a bathroom appliance while at Cape Town International Airport waiting to board a flight to Johannesburg.

White: Have mercy on World Cup players

The Western Cape directorate for public prosecutions is to decide the fate of Zimbabwean student Tinashe Rioga, who allegedly tried to hijack a South African Airways flight from Cape Town to Johannesburg in June last year. ID names top team for Cape Town

Lights out for SA

The lights went out in several parts of South Africa on Thursday morning as Eskom carried out load-shedding as its capacity was stretched by a surprise surge in consumption. Power plants failed, including Koeberg nuclear power station’s unit one, when the turbine tripped at 2.18am. ”There is a national alert,” said Eskom spokesperson Tony Stott.

Search for missing crew off Cape Point

A search involving boats and aircraft is under way for two missing crewmen from a fishing vessel that sank about 20 nautical miles off Cape Point, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said on Wednesday afternoon. NSRI media spokesperson Craig Lambinon said a ”40-foot sport fishing vessel” had been reported overdue at 11am.

DA accuses Pahad of dishonesty

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has accused Minister in the Presidency Essop Pahad of not giving ”an honest answer” to a parliamentary question. The question was whether the Presidency had commissioned a R1-million corporate sponsorship for author Ronald Suresh Roberts to write a book about President Thabo Mbeki. In a written reply, in November 2004, Pahad said it had not.
