Daunting task for new Malawian president

As Malawi’s courts grapple with the electoral challenge lodged by the opposition Mgwirizano coalition to last week’s poll, the country’s new President, Bingu wa Mutharika, is trying to win hearts and minds with talk of poverty alleviation and corruption busting. "Malawi is not a poor country," he said at his swearing-in ceremony.

Delays dog power project in Malawi

It’s a tale of delays, missed deadlines and the grinding problems that can dog large-scale infrastructure projects. Work to connect electricity lines between Malawi and Mozambique was scheduled to have been completed by 2002. The deadline has now been shifted to 2005, however -– and officials aren’t ruling out 2006.

Fat cats are rolling in money in Malawi

Corrupt fat cats in Malawi continue to walk around with their heads held high, even though they have been caught with their hands in the cookie jar. The consequences of their acts are set to remain a burden on this poor Southern African country of more than 11-million people as it prepares to go to the polls in May.

Making gambling a safe bet in Africa

The gambling industry is making inroads on the African continent. If not closely monitored, it could bring with it a host of evils such as prostitution, money laundering and fraud — not to mention gambling addiction. These problems were discussed in Malawi recently at a meeting of industry regulators from around the continent.
