We voted for Khune, say coaches

Itumeleng Khune and not Teko Modise should have been named the Premier Soccer League’s (PSL) best footballer this season if coaches had voted along the lines they suggested to the Mail & Guardian this week. The credibility of the selection is being compared to that of the Zimbabwean election.

SuperSport and Ajax teach the rest a lesson

Regardless of how they fare in this weekend’s final matches of the football season, SuperSport United and Ajax Cape Town have a lot to be proud of. Both have had a season made in heaven. Considering that both lost influential coaches — SuperSport’s Pitso Mosimane joined the national team brains trust and Ajax’s Muhsin Ertugral went to Kaizer Chiefs — they were expected to struggle.

Four-goal Mashego takes United to the top

SuperSport United went to the top of the Absa Premiership table after thrashing Moroka Swallows 4-2 at the Super Stadium on Saturday night, courtesy of four goals by substitute Katlego Mashego. Swallows’ Sandile Ndlovu scored first in the 59th minute, but two minutes later Mashego started his four-goal blitz.

After failing to defend their Absa Premiership title and sacking one of the country’s top coaches in Gordon Igesund earlier this season, the Brazilians have finally turned the corner under caretaker coach Trott Moloto, who replaced Igesund.

SuperSport United continued their rampant run in the Absa Premiership with a convincing 2-0 win over Platinum Stars at Olympia Park in Rustenburg on Sunday. SuperSport have won five and drawn two of their seven games since the second round of fixtures got under way in February, and now trail log leaders Ajax Cape Town by a single point.

Klate strike seals SuperSport victory

SuperSport United cut Ajax Cape Town’s lead at the top of the Premier Soccer League to one point after a superb goal by Dane Klate gave the hosts a 3-2 victory over Ajax on Tuesday night. Kermit Erasmus scored his first goal for Matsatsantsa in the 23rd minute, but Nathan Paulse equalised six minutes later for the Cape club.

It was probably not meant for public consumption, but SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt was overheard suggesting during the goalless Absa Premiership draw against Wits University at Bidvest Stadium on Friday night that ”the people watching the game should get their money back”.

Orlando Pirates travel to Durban for their Premier Soccer League (PSL) clash with Golden Arrows this weekend, while SuperSport United host Bidvest Wits in another big match. Pirates, fresh from their first home victory, travel to Chatsworth to face an Arrows side who will not easily succumb.

Draw for Swallows not bad, but …

Moroka Swallows completed a 1-1 Premier Soccer League (PSL) draw against Santos at an almost deserted Athlone Stadium on Sunday. Also, Jomo Cosmos beat SuperSport United, Bloemfontein Celtic and Free State Stars drew 1-1 and Ajax Cape Town came back from behind to beat Benoni Premier United 2-2.
