SuperSport United went to the top of the Absa Premiership table after thrashing Moroka Swallows 4-2 at the Super Stadium on Saturday night, courtesy of four goals by substitute Katlego Mashego.
Swallows’ Sandile Ndlovu scored first in the 59th minute, but two minutes later Mashego started his four-goal blitz.
Mark Haskins put the visitors in the lead again in the 66th minute and this spurred SuperSport — and particularly Mashego, who came on for Kermit Erasmus after the break — to rout the Soweto team, who had no reply to his penalty in the 68th minute, a strike two minutes later and a goal in time added on to make the score 4-2.
SuperSport lead the Premiership log with 51 points, closely followed by Ajax Cape Town, who have 50. With two games to go, United have a slim advantage.
SuperSport host high-flying Golden Arrows next Wednesday at the same venue and could be crowned league champs in Bloemfontein when they face the resurgent Bloemfontein Celtic on May 18.
Ajax have to hope the log leaders lose or draw while they have to beat city rivals Santos and Arrows in their remaining fixtures to annex the league title.
Matsatsantsa’s display Saturday night showed that they are determined and capable of capturing their first league championship under the guidance of former Swallows coach Gavin Hunt. — Sapa
