A Ghanaian conservation research centre will assist a Canadian company in harvesting underwater trees in one of the world’s largest tropical hardwood forests. Ghana’s Volta Lake is a reservoir that was created as part of a hydroelectric project more than 40 years ago.

The victims of flooding in northern Ghana are still crying out for help, three weeks after the water started rising, sweeping away their crops and homes. The torrential rains and floods that have ravaged sub-Saharan Africa from the Atlantic coast to the Indian Ocean are believed to be the worst in three decades.

Torrential downpours and flash floods across Africa have submerged whole towns and washed away bridges, farms and schools. This summer’s rains have killed more than 150 people, displaced hundreds of thousands and prompted the United Nations to warn of a rising risk of disease outbreaks.
