African National Congress (ANC) parliamentary Chief Whip Isaac Mogase was on Wednesday removed from his position by the party’s new leadership. Briefing reporters after the party’s caucus met at Parliament, ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe said Mogase would be replaced by ANC MP Nathi Mthethwa.

The African National Congress (ANC) parliamentary caucus has dismissed ”malicious” media reports alleging that President Thabo Mbeki used a caucus meeting last week to launch a veiled attack on ANC deputy president Jacob Zuma.

Political parties on Tuesday paid tribute to outgoing Democratic Party MP Douglas Gibson, who is leaving Parliament to take up a post as South Africa’s ambassador to Thailand. The African National Congress said despite the fact that Gibson had previously said things that offended its MPs, it would always respect his courage.

Parliamentary opposition parties were unmoved on Tuesday by the Presidency’s explanation of the suspension of National Director of Public Prosecutions Vusi Pikoli. Freedom Front Plus MP Willie Spies said: ”We have left [a meeting with the Presidency] with more questions than there were answers.”
