Jermain Defoe scored five goals as Tottenham Hotspur thrashed Wigan Athletic 9-1 at White Hart Lane on Sunday.
Tottenham and Chelsea stayed neck and neck at the top of the English Premier League with away victories on Sunday.
Substitute Jermain Defoe struck twice after the break to earn England a 2-2 draw with The Netherlands on Wednesday.

Jermain Defoe scored his first goal since returning to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, firing an equaliser in a 1-1 draw against Portsmouth.
Opportunities to reach an FA Cup final do not come around often, especially for the likes of Portsmouth, West Bromwich Albion, Cardiff City and Barnsley, who will be battling out this weekend’s semifinals at Wembley. It is the first time since 1908 that only one team from the top flight have reached the semifinals.

North London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham saw the first leg of their League Cup semifinal end in a 1-1 draw at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday. In a match where both sides put together some slick passing moves, Tottenham took the lead eight minutes before half-time when Jermaine Jenas calmly slotted home after being played in by Robbie Keane.
It was a case of as you were at the head of the English Premier League as the top three sides all enjoyed a winning start to 2008. Leaders Arsenal remained two points in front with a 2-0 New Year’s Day victory over West Ham at the Emirates Stadium. Elsewhere on Tuesday, Manchester United stayed hot on Arsenal’s heels after a 1-0 success at home to Birmingham City.
Premier League clubs are waiting for Tuesday’s opening of the month-long January transfer window, some seeking to tweak their squad as they press for the title and others hoping to add players in the fight to stay in England’s most lucrative competition.

Arsenal reclaimed first place in the Premier League as Arsene Wenger’s side routed Everton 4-1 to take advantage of Manchester United’s surprise 2-1 defeat at West Ham on Saturday. The Gunners moved two points clear of United thanks to Eduardo’s double strike and late goals from Emmanuel Adebayor and Tomas Rosicky.

Tottenham had an injury-time penalty kick saved in a 1-1 draw Sunday at West Ham in the Premier League. West Ham goalkeeper Robert Green dived to his left to save the shot from Jermain Defoe, who had earned the penalty after being brought down by Lucas Neill.
Tottenham marked the 125th anniversary of the club’s formation with an extraordinary fightback to earn a 4-4 draw with Aston Villa that may just have been enough to save manager Martin Jol from the sack. Under-pressure Jol had the air of a condemned man as Spurs were left trailing 4-1 with half an hour left to play.
