ANC: Zuma has no links to Hlophe

The African National Congress (ANC) said on Saturday that its president, Jacob Zuma, had nothing to do with a judge accused of trying to influence members of the Constitutional Court in cases involving him. Media reported on Friday that the court said Cape Judge President John Hlophe had approached several members of its bench to influence them.

Mbeki: Cops will root out Jo’burg ‘anarchy’

President Thabo Mbeki on Monday reiterated his call for an immediate end to attacks on foreign nationals in Gauteng, which have left 22 people dead and up to 10 000 seeking refuge in shelters. ”Citizens from other countries on the African continent and beyond are as human as we are and deserve to be treated with respect,” the president.

DA says Khampepe report to be released on May 5

The full Khampepe commission report will be gazetted on May 5, the official opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) said on Monday. DA leader Helen Zille said the presidency had written to the DA to inform it of the move. Zille said the report was a crucial source of information during the legislative process to decide on the future of the unit.

Happy birthday, Mr (ANC) President

African National Congress (ANC) president Jacob Zuma celebrated his 66th birthday on Saturday. Unlike Zuma’s birthday last year, when 1 000 people attended a lavish affair at Durban’s International Convention Centre, no major events have been planned for his 66th birthday.

ANC wants probe into high food prices

The African National Congress (ANC) on Thursday called on the Competition Commission to intensify its investigations into the causes of high food prices. A spokesperson said all stakeholders in food prices should convene an urgent meeting to discuss ways of minimising the effect of high food prices on the poor.

Cosatu welcomes Atteridgeville arrests

The arrest of 12 people for the brutal killings of two foreigners in Atteridgeville, Pretoria, was welcomed by the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) on Thursday. Two foreign nationals were killed on Tuesday when a crowd of people assaulted them and set their shacks alight in the Brazzaville informal settlement.

Tributes pour in for Kondlo

Ncumisa Kondlo, a member of the African National Congress (ANC) national executive committee (NEC) and deputy chairperson of the South African Communist Party, died in East London on Monday, the ANC said. Kondlo was elected to the NEC in December 2007 and also served on the party’s national working committee.

Zuma’s legal battle continues

African National Congress president Jacob Zuma arrived at the Constitutional Court on Tuesday amid a heavy security presence and the sound of camera shutters as photographers attempted to shoot pictures. A heavy police presence was visible around the court buildings while journalists packed the press gallery trying to get a view of Zuma.
