Kabila officially declared president of DRC

Joseph Kabila was officially declared the winner on Monday of the first free elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in 41 years after the Supreme Court ruled out a legal challenge by the losing candidate. Kabila was ”elected by absolute majority president of the Democratic Republic of Congo”, Supreme Court chief Benoit Iwamba said.

Volcano erupts in restive DRC region

A volcano has erupted near the city of Goma in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), spewing lava in an area devastated by a major eruption four years ago. The area around Goma has seen days of clashes between forces loyal to a dissident former general and the DRC’s army that have killed at least three people.

Security high in DRC ahead of electoral-challenge ruling

Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and United Nations security forces were out in strength on Monday in a tense Kinshasa ahead of a Supreme Court ruling on an electoral challenge by losing presidential candidate Jean-Pierre Bemba. UN troops open fire on rebels in eastern DRC

United Nations helicopters and peacekeepers on Monday opened fire against rebels after coming under attack in and around the volatile eastern town of Sake in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), a spokesperson for the UN mission in the DRC said. Forces loyal to a rebel general seized part of Sake on Sunday in heavy fire fights with government soldiers.

Mass graves found in DRC

The rotting corpses of about 30 men, women and children have been found in mass graves in the strife-torn north-eastern Ituri region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), a military prosecutor said on Friday. The remains were found on Wednesday in three graves at Bavi, a town about 40km south of the regional capital Bunia.

Bemba formally contests result of DRC vote
