Armed gang storms Durban bank

An armed gang stormed into a Durban bank on Friday, holding staff and customers at gunpoint, KwaZulu-Natal police said. ”Five armed suspects entered, took cash and a customer’s vehicle and fled,” said Superintendent Willie Olivier of Durban’s Organised Crime Unit

Toddlers safe after night in hijacked car

Two Pietermaritzburg toddlers were found safe on Sunday morning after spending the night in a hijacked bakkie, said KwaZulu-Natal police. Superintendent Henry Budhram said an Ashdown resident, who had heard radio broadcasts of the hijacking, went to investigate when he saw the Nissan double cab parked in Bhekezulu Road at 7am.

Austrian man shot dead on KZN golf course

An Austrian national was shot and killed at Selborne Estate, which is enclosed by electric fencing, in Durban south, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Saturday. The 46-year-old man booked into the estate at about 3pm on Friday and went to play a round of golf. His body was discovered on the course at about 6pm.

Prison escapee dies in shoot-out

A Qalakabusha prison escapee died on Friday morning after a shoot-out with law enforcement officials, KwaZulu-Natal police said. Police spokesperson Captain Jabulani Mdletshe said the incident took place at 2am in Mtubatuba. Xolani Ngobese and nine other convicted criminals escaped from the prison in northern KwaZulu-Natal on August 4 this year.

Durban shootings leave one dead, two hurt

One person has died and two others were seriously injured in separate shootings in Durban late on Thursday night. Spokesperson Superintendent Danelia Veldhuizen said detectives were investigating the possibility that two of the shootings — which took place in the Hillcrest area — could have been linked.

Fifth Rattray murder accused appears in court

The fifth man arrested in connection with the murder of historian David Rattray appeared briefly in the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court on Wednesday, KwaZulu-Natal police said. Zwelihle Mtshali (21) had his case postponed until Thursday, when he would appear in the local high court, police spokesperson Superintendent Muzi Mngomezulu said.

Court clerk held for 178 counts of fraud

A Pietermaritzburg court clerk was arrested after being linked to 178 counts of theft and fraud, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Wednesday. Spokesperson Inspector Joey Jeevan said a team arrested the 38-year-old woman at the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, after months of intensive investigations.

Fifth Rattray murder suspect arrested

KwaZulu-Natal police have arrested a fifth suspect for the murder of historian David Rattray. Police spokesperson Superintendent Muzi Mngomezulu said on Tuesday he could confirm that a fifth suspect had been arrested and was expected to appear in the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Wednesday.
