Mother, baby dumped on roadside after hijacking

A mother and her 19-month-old baby were dumped on the side of a road in Pietermaritzburg after being hijacked, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Wednesday.

Spokesperson Superintendent Henry Budhram said the father was dropped off at a different location.

The couple and their child were hijacked by two gunmen at their home in Pietermaritzburg’s Imbali suburb at 7.45pm on Tuesday.

”The armed men took control of the vehicle and drove towards Richmond Road and as the vehicle approached France Township, the men demanded money from the couple,” said Budhram.

”The couple did not have any money with them and the gunmen then drove back to the couple’s house, where the wife was forced to hand over her purse containing almost R2 400 in cash, their cellphones and various cards,” said Budhram.

He said the couple and their baby were then forced back into the car and dropped in different areas. They were reunited at a police station.

Budhram said no arrests were made and the car was still missing. – Sapa
