No food crisis here, says Senegal’s president

Senegal’s President Abdoulaye Wade said on Monday there was neither famine nor hunger riots in the West African country, blaming a recent rally on opposition groups. ”There is no famine in Senegal. There are no hunger riots in Senegal,” Wade said while inaugurating an agricultural project in the village of Djilakh, 80km south of Dakar.

France blames Chinese for Olympic torch chaos

France’s interior minister faulted the Chinese organisers of the Olympic torch relay for its chaotic run through Paris, saying in an interview on Wednesday that French police merely provided technical support. "The Olympic rule is that the organising country is always responsible for preserving the flame," Interior Minister Michele Alliot-Marie said.

French citizens detained in Darfur orphan kidnap saga

Nine French citizens have been arrested in Chad after being accused of attempting to take 103 orphaned children from Darfur out of the country to be adopted by French families, French media reported on Friday. The nine suspects were taken into custody at the airport of Abeche, in eastern Chad, as they were preparing to leave the country with the children.
