Tendulkar triumphs on familiar territory

Sachin Tendulkar returned in style to the Headingley ground where he was Yorkshire’s first overseas player as he set up India’s 38-run win against England under the Duckworth/Lewis method in the fifth one-day international on Sunday. India’s victory reduced England’s lead in the seven-match series to 3-2.

Windies slump to record defeat

England inflicted the West Indies’ worst Test defeat of all time, breaking a 50-year-old record, as they won the second Test by an innings and 283 runs to go 1-0 up in the four-match series on Monday. West Indies, 137-6 at tea on the fourth day, lasted just 25 balls after the resumption, losing their last three wickets on 141 after being made to follow on.

Vaughan, Pietersen lead English effort

Michael Vaughan and Kevin Pietersen hit centuries on Friday to take England to 366 for five after the first day of the second Test against the West Indies at Headingley. Vaughan scored his 16th 100 in his first Test back after 18 months out. He hit 11 boundaries for 103 and shared in a 163-run third-wicket stand with Pietersen.

Donald given England coaching role

Allan Donald, the South Africa pace bowling great, has been given a role with England’s coaching staff, it was announced on Friday. In a statement, the England and Wales Cricket Board said Donald would assist England’s fast bowlers on a short-term basis from the lead-in to the third Test at Old Trafford through to the end of the one-day series against the West Indies in July.

England have to make do without Freddie

England’s pace bowlers will be given another chance to prove they can function without Freddie after all-rounder Andrew Flintoff was ruled out of the second Test against the West Indies starting at Headingley on Friday. Officials decided against bringing paceman Flintoff back for the second match of a four-Test series after he missed the drawn series opener at Lord’s.

Fletcher sings Panesar’s praises

England coach Duncan Fletcher has called Monty Panesar the best finger spinner in the world after the left-armer produced another impressive display against Pakistan. Panesar took 3-39 in the second innings at Headingley and six wickets in the match as the hosts completed a 167-run third Test victory and with it secured an unbeatable 2-0 lead in the four-match series.

England crush Pakistan to clinch series

England crushed Pakistan by 167 runs on Tuesday to win the third Test and the series after a moment of madness from Mohammad Yousuf and one of magic from Monty Panesar. Pakistan, set 323 to win on the final day, were bowled out for 155 halfway through the afternoon session, giving England their first home win over the tourists since 1982.

Republicans push to end monarchy in UK

Britain’s Prince Charles may have a fight on his hands when the time comes to inherit the crown from his elderly mother, Queen Elizabeth II, if a growing band of republicans has its way. The movement wants to swap the monarchy for an elected head of state, effectively making Charles and the rest of the royal family redundant.

Radebe drops Leeds coaching hint

South Africa football great Lucas Radebe is pondering a move into coaching with Leeds United after being approached by manager Kevin Blackwell. The 36-year-old former Bafana Bafana captain has spent the past 11 years at Leeds, now in the second tier of English football, but is set to retire at the end of the season following an Achilles tendon injury.
