Michael Vaughan and Kevin Pietersen hit centuries on Friday to take England to 366 for five after the first day of the second Test against the West Indies at Headingley.
Vaughan scored his 16th 100 in his first Test back after 18 months out with various injuries. He hit 11 boundaries for 103 and shared in a 163-run third-wicket stand with Pietersen.
Pietersen reached his hundred off 104 balls, finishing not out 130 with 15 boundaries at stumps.
”I was very nervous this morning,” Vaughan said. ”When you’ve had an 18-month wait, it’s very special to go out there to score a few and not yield to the pressure. I’m delighted, but more importantly, I’m really pleased with the team’s position today.”
It was Vaughan’s first century since he hit 166 against Australia at Old Trafford in the third Ashes Test in August 2005. He missed the Lord’s Test with a broken finger — another in a long list of injuries that has kept him out of Test cricket since a tour of Pakistan in December 2005.
He was out caught hooking by Runako Morton at backward square leg off Jerome Taylor.
Vaughan won the toss and elected to bat.
England lost opener Andrew Strauss (15) in the ninth over after he nicked a wide delivery from Daren Powell and was caught by wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin.
Vaughan combined with Cook to add 53 runs for the second wicket, before Cook (42) was out lbw by Chris Gayle on the last ball before lunch to leave England on 91 for two.
After his stand with Vaughan, Pietersen watched Paul Collingwood and Ian Bell fall to the swing bowling of Corey Collymore, who finished with figures of two for 80 off 21 overs.
Collingwood added 62 runs with Pietersen before he was out for 29 off a low catch from Gayle at first slip. Bell made five before he was caught behind off Collymore.
West Indies captain Ramnaresh Sarwan fell heavily while trying to stop a drive from Collingwood hitting the boundary rope. He walked off the pitch clutching his right shoulder and Daren Ganga took over the captaincy.
West Indies team spokesperson Imran Khan said Sarwan had injured a joint near his collarbone, but was unsure if he was able to bat.
England was without injured fast-bowler Matthew Hoggard and all-rounder Andrew Flintoff. Ryan Sidebottom was included for the first time in six years to replace Hoggard.
West Indies made one change because batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul had a knee injury. He was replaced in the middle order by Sylvester Joseph for his fifth Test and first since 2005. — Sapa-AP
