Liverpool prevail in Champions League

Liverpool’s mastery in winning penalty-kick shoot-outs extends to even the guys who weren’t on the team two years ago. Liverpool beat PSV to reach semifinals

With a three-goal, first-leg lead, and facing a weakened PSV Eindhoven, Liverpool didn’t need a superhuman effort to reach European Champions League semifinals. Cahill leads tributes to derby hero Johnson

Tim Cahill backed Andrew Johnson to get 20 goals this season after the England striker scored an opportunist double to fire his side to a 3-0 derby victory over Liverpool on Saturday. Johnson’s brace, after Cahill had opened the scoring, extended Everton’s unbeaten start to the season to four matches and Australian midfielder Cahill insisted there was no reason why the run should not continue.

Delron Buckley given Everton trial

South Africa winger Delron Buckley was handed a trial with English Premiership club Everton on Tuesday. Buckley (28) will train with the Merseysiders in an attempt to persuade manager David Moyes to give him a permanent contract. The Durban-born player was released by German club Borussia Dortmund at the end of last season.

Gerrard: Liverpool are on the rise

Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard warned on Tuesday that his side are on the rise and will be better equipped than ever to challenge Chelsea for next year’s Premiership title. ”We have progressed a lot in the last year,” said Gerrard. ”The gap was 35 points last season, this time around we are better than half that. Numbersixvalverde wins Grand National

Irish raider Numbersixvalverde won the Grand National in Liverpool on Saturday giving jockey Niall ”Slippers” Madden victory with his first ride and Ireland their fifth win in the world’s most famous race in the last eight years. The Martin Brassil-trained 11-1 shot beat home last year’s winner and topweight Hedgehunter (5-1) while Clan Royal (5-1) was third and Nil Desperandum (33-1) fourth.

Everton teen on Rooney route to fame

James Vaughan became the latest teenager to be feted at Goodison Park when his goal in a 4-0 win against struggling Crystal Palace established the 16-year-old as the youngest English Premiership goal-scorer.
