All Blacks crush valiant Portugal

Odds-on World Cup favourites New Zealand brushed aside a spirited but hopelessly outclassed Portugal 108-13 in a Pool C game on Saturday, but it was not all plain sailing for the All Blacks. Portugal, the last of the 20 teams to qualify for the World Cup and with only three professionals in the match-day squad of 22, never gave up in the blistering heat at Stade Gerland.

Kiwi coach calls for consistency in citings

All Black coach Graham Henry on Friday called for consistency from the International Rugby Board (IRB) when it dealt with incidents of foul play after a severe clampdown in the opening games of the World Cup. With the tournament barely into its second week, the IRB has sent out a firm message to the teams that foul play will not be tolerated.

Argentina struggle to beat battling Georgia

Argentina closed in on the World Cup quarterfinals on Tuesday with a 33-3 win over a battling Georgia side, which was topped-off by a last-minute try that guaranteed a crucial bonus point. However, the eastern European side won plenty of new fans when they held the Pumas, who shocked France in the opening game, to just 6-3 at the interval.

Angry Pumas go for big win against Georgia

Argentina made another statement for inclusion in a top annual competition with their win over France but their treatment as second class citizens is manifest in having to play their second World Cup match four days later. The Pumas meet Georgia in the next Pool D game at the Gerland stadium on Tuesday.

Australia run riot against Japan

Twice champions Australia showed they are starting to rediscover their best form at the perfect time by thrashing Japan 91-3 in their opening World Cup Pool B match on Saturday. Despite playing their first game in seven weeks, the Wallabies gave a brilliant display of open rugby to pile on 13 unanswered tries in their opening match of the tournament.

New Zealand completely outclassed France in the first of two autumn Tests in Lyon on Saturday, handing the home side an emphatic seven-try 47-3 drubbing. In an entralling display that combined ferocious defence with fearless attack, New Zealand made a mockery of the game’s billing as a contest between the world’s two leading rugby-playing nations.

Ten All Blacks changes for France

New Zealand coach Graham Henry on Tuesday made 10 changes to the team that beat England when he named his side to take on France in the first of two Tests in Lyon on Saturday. His decision to ring the changes from the side who outplayed the reigning world champions 41-20 at Twickenham had been widely anticipated.

Seeds fall in Lyon

Top seeds Marcos Baghdatis and Gaston Gaudio were packing their bags on Tuesday after being ousted in the first round of the €659 000 Lyon ATP tennis tournament. Home hope Arnaud Clement dispatched number one seeded Baghdatis 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 as lowly German Simon Greul hammered Argentine Gaudio.

Arrest warrant for Charles Taylor

Interpol said on Thursday it has issued an international arrest warrant for Charles Taylor, the former Liberian president living in exile in Nigeria, following a request from a United Nations-backed war crimes tribunal in Sierra Leone. Taylor is wanted on charges of crimes against humanity and ”grave breaches” of the Geneva Convention.
