The United Nations will close its human rights office in Angola after the authorities there withdrew their cooperation, the office of the high commissioner said on Friday. Angola has ordered the office to cease its operations by the end of May after pulling out of talks to establish a formal agreement to regulate the rights body’s work in the country.

Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Helen Zille has accused the Public Protector of abusing his office for party political purposes in attacking DA MP Mike Waters. She declared that in the six years since his appointment, Lawrence Mushwana, a former ANC MP, has succeeded only in protecting the ANC from the people.

The Ministry of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs has been allocated Z-trillion in the 2008 national budget for the construction of the new Parliament building, the Herald newspaper reported on Tuesday. The contractor — Chinese company Nantong International — is already on site, the report said.
