Print Media South Africa (PMSA) is seeking an urgent meeting with Minister in the Presidency Essop Pahad after he threatened to withdraw government advertising from the Sunday Times. PMSA said it sought a meeting with the minister after he expressed his view that the government should pull its advertising from the weekly.

Koni Media Holdings on Sunday denied government involvement in its bid to take over media and entertainment company Johncom. ”Koni Media strongly denies any involvement of the Presidency or any other government structures in its bid for a 100% stake in Johncom,” said group CEO Groovin Nchabeleng.

President Thabo Mbeki has ignored all written parliamentary questions addressed to him by the official opposition party, the Democratic Alliance (DA) said on Thursday. DA parliamentary leader Sandra Botha said Mbeki had not responded to all nine questions that the party had addressed to him this year.

Lawyers acting for Chris Hani’s killers said they would proceed with an application to the high court, asking it to compel President Thabo Mbeki to make a decision on their application for a presidential pardon. Janusz Walus and Clive Derby-Lewis unsuccessfully sought amnesty from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in 1999 for the 1993 assassination of Hani.

The Presidency has declined to confirm whether President Thabo Mbeki will hold back on appointing the new South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) board as requested by labour and civil society organisations, saying it will address its written response directly to those organisations that had made the call.
Police National Commissioner Jackie Selebi’s office has rejected claims that police regulations require Selebi’s suspension while allegations against him are being investigated. Selebi’s spokesperson Director Sally de Beer said on Tuesday a Freedom Front Plus statement in this regard was incorrect.

Rapule Tabane writes of the diversity among black voices (Mail & Guardian, September 21 2007) but after reading his article I was left with more questions than answers. Questions such as: What shade of opinion accurately reflects the media? How is it that the ”many shades of opinion” and ”many unwinnable debates” end up in just one debate between just two kinds of opinion, right (media) and wrong (media critics)?

President Thabo Mbeki is about to act against police National Commissioner Jackie Selebi, the Cape Argus reported on Tuesday. An inquiry into claims that Selebi had links with crime syndicates would be Mbeki’s second major step following the suspension of National Prosecuting Authority head Vusi Pikoli, the newspaper said.

A report in the Saturday Star that tens of millions of rands had been sourced from the Presidency and pumped into the now banned drug Virodene was based on innuendo, the Presidency said on Saturday. Mukoni Ratshitanga, spokesperson for the Presidency, said the story was devoid of concrete facts.
