Dozens killed in massive US tornado outbreak

Dozens of tornadoes ripped across southern American states, causing severe damage and killing at least 45 people, officials and United States media said on Wednesday. More than 50 tornadoes touched down as a series of thunderstorms rare for the winter season rolled through the region late on Tuesday and early on Wednesday.

Zoo euthanises elderly cheetah

A 17-year-old cheetah believed to be North America’s oldest captive-born female of the species has died, the Nashville Zoo said on Monday. The cheetah named Louise was euthanised on January 2 after an examination revealed kidney failure, zoo officials said. Her condition was diagnosed after zoo workers noticed she was not eating and losing weight.

Flatulent passenger grounds US airline flight

It may be one problem airline security officials never envisioned — a passenger lighting matches in flight to mask odours from her flatulence. The woman’s actions resulted in an emergency landing on Monday in Nashville of an American Airlines flight bound for Dallas from Washington, DC, said Lynne Lowrance, a spokesperson for Nashville’s airport.

Tornadoes sweep through Tennessee, killing 10 people

A line of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes marched across the nation’s midsection, peeling away roofs, overturning cars and killing at least 10 people in Tennessee, officials said. They were the second wave of violent weather to hit Tennessee in less than a week. Last weekend, thunderstorms and tornadoes killed 24 people in the western part of the state.

Mom charged after racy birthday gift for son

A mother faces criminal charges after she hired a stripper to dance at her 16-year-old son’s birthday party. Anette Pharris (34) has been indicted by a grand jury on charges of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and involving a minor in obscene acts. The boy’s father, the stripper and two others also face charges.

Future looks bright for private prisons company

The United States’s largest operator of private prisons expects to benefit from the Bush administration’s expansion of federal police and thinks prison overcrowding could lead to more business. Corrections Corporation of America, which houses about 63 000 inmates in 20 states and the District of Columbia, also told investors that the demographic producing many prisoners — males between 18 to 24 years old — is growing and should create more demand for its services.
