Talks to resolve the wage dispute between the National Union of Metal Workers of South Africa and employers in the motor industry were under way on Friday, the union said. Spokesperson Mziwakhe Hlangani said: ”They are in talks as we speak … there are no new developments yet, it’s better to speak a bit later.”

Volkswagen South Africa stopped vehicle production at its Uitenhage plant on Thursday due to the motor-manufacturing strike. Brian Smith, Volkswagen South Africa’s human resources director, said most of its 4Â 000 production employees had been sent home.

More than 50 000 South African vehicle-component workers are set to go on indefinite strike on Wednesday after a breakdown in wage talks, the main metalworkers’ union said on Monday. Mziwakhe Hlangani, spokesperson for the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa, said in a statement the strike would affect automotive-component suppliers.

South African unions have wrested hefty wage increases from employers, wielding strikes as weapons at a time of high inflation and strong performance in the key mining sector and government surpluses. The strength of unions, traditionally allied with the left wing of the African National Congress (ANC), could become critical with a looming showdown over who will succeed President Thabo Mbeki as president of the ANC.
