Henin-Hardenne wins Pilot Pen

Lindsay Davenport began Saturday seeking to defend her Pilot Pen title. She ended it hoping she’ll be able to play in the US Open. Davenport retired from the Pilot Pen championship with an injured right shoulder, allowing Justine Henin-Hardenne to take the title in the final hard-court tune-up before the year’s last Grand Slam tournament, which starts on Monday.

Mauresmo, Henin-Hardenne win first matches back

World number one Amelie Mauresmo and number two Justine Henin-Hardenne came through their first matches since the Wimbledon final to reach the New Haven quarterfinals on Wednesday. Wimbledon champion Mauresmo overcame Russian qualifier Galina Voskoboeva and Henin-Hardenne had to work harder than the scoreline suggests for her win over Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain.

US agents seize ‘Saddam Hussein’s car’

Federal customs agents seized a Mercedes-Benz from an army reservist who said the armour-plated, bulletproofed luxury car probably belonged to Saddam Hussein. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents said on Thursday that the car, which was also equipped with loudspeakers and hidden microphones, was being treated as a ”possible war trophy”.
