Impala Platinum said on Thursday it had proposed a cash and shares deal valued at about R25-billion to buy Mvelaphanda Resources and Northam Platinum.
Northam Platinum posted a 12% rise in full-year earnings on high metal prices, despite weaker output, and forecast rising output.
Nedbank Capital has structured a deal that will assist BEE mining company Mvelaphanda Resources increase its stake in Northam Platinum to 63%.

The world’s biggest producer of platinum, Anglo Platinum, said on Thursday it shut a shaft at its largest operation on Wednesday after one worker was killed, sending platinum prices to a new record. Simon Tebele, a spokesperson at AngloPlat, could not say for how long the Paardekraal shaft in Rustenburg would be closed.

The world’s top platinum producer, Angloplat, launched a R35-billion black economic empowerment (BEE) deal on Tuesday to sell mines to two black-led firms and hand out shares to its mostly black workers. The deals will forge two new major players in South Africa’s platinum sector, the world’s largest, and burnish credentials of Angloplat.
