The miners are in a comfortable position as the world creeps towards a lower-carbon future

Northam Platinum has done “fantastically” compared with other platinum mines.
The platinum miner seeks to up its production in expectation of a deficit on platinum supply from 2018 onward.
Meetings have resumed between Amcu and major platinum mines, but analysts are divided about whether an end to the three-month strike is in sight.
The strike-hit miner has fallen out of favour with Investec Assest Management but Coronation Fund Managers like the prospects of the platinunm sector.
At least 70 000 Amcu members plan to down tools at the country’s biggest platinum mines on Thursday.

The National Union of Mineworkers said on Wednesday that Northam Platinum had marginally raised its pay offer to end a strike.
More than 5 000 workers at South Africa’s Northam Platinum went on a one-day strike on Thursday in a protest over the deaths of two miners.
Two miners died at Northam Platinum’s Zondereinde mine near Thabazimbi, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said on Wednesday.
Northam Platinum said on Thursday it would start construction on a big new platinum mine by early 2010.
Northam Platinum’s full-year profit was down on weaker platinum prices as well as steeper costs, the company said on Friday.

Impala Platinum’s (Implats) R21,2-billion bid for Mvelaphanda Resources and Northam Platinum has moved a step closer to formalisation.
Shares in Impala Platinum fell more than 3% on Friday after it unveiled plans to buy Mvelaphanda Resources and Northam Platinum for R22-billion.
