Quake strikes off Philippines coast

A strong earthquake measuring 6,9 struck in the ocean off the east coast of the Philippines on Monday night, but so far there have been no reports of damage, officials said. The quake, which struck at 10.11pm local time was centred about 175km east-south-east of Pandan, Catanduanes, in the central Philippines at a depth of 24,2km.

Strong earthquake hits Papua New Guinea

A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6,7 rocked eastern Papua New Guinea on Thursday, causing some damage and plunging parts of the coastal city of Lae into darkness, officials and witnesses said. The quake hit just before 6.48pm local time with the epicentre about 400km north of the capital, Port Moresby.

Powerful quake hits northern Chile

A powerful, 7,7-magnitude earthquake hit northern Chile on Wednesday, the United States Geological Survey reported. It said the quake, 60km deep, was centred 106km west of the town of Calama and struck at 3.40pm GMT. The National Emergency Office in Chile said it had no information on any casualties but it was evaluating the impact of the quake.

Large earthquake near Guam, buildings sway

A strong earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 7,1 hit near the United States Pacific territory of Guam on Sunday, Japan’s Meteorological Agency said, but island media said there were no immediate reports of injuries. Guam’s Pacific Daily News said the quake could be felt in high-rise buildings on the island.

Strong earthquake hits Solomon Islands

A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6,9 hit the Solomon Islands on Sunday and could potentially generate local tsunami waves, but a Pacific-wide tsunami was not expected, seismologists said. The undersea earthquake struck just after 1am GMT at a depth of 35km, with an aftershock of 4,8 about 20 minutes later.
