Taxi drivers and operators across the country will strike from September 1 over the implementation of the Bus Rapid Transit system.
The South African National Taxi Council launched a ”taxi pledge” on Monday. The spotlight has been on taxi violence recently after a 25-year-old woman was stripped and assaulted by taxi drivers at Johannesburg’s Noord Street taxi rank because she was wearing a miniskirt.
Minibus-taxi commuters should brace themselves for an increase in taxi fares due to the increase in the petrol price, the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) said on Tuesday. ”We are pressed and we can no longer afford petrol prices. We are forced to put our hands in the commuters’ pockets,” said Santaco general secretary Philip Taaibosch.
A national taxi body is to apologise to the woman who was sexually assaulted at Johannesburg’s Noord Street taxi rank last month. ”We would like publicly apologise to her … we just want to meet her,” said South African National Taxi Council secretary general Philip Taaibosch in Johannesburg on Friday.
