The ”nightmare” of South Africa’s major gold, platinum and diamond mines shutting down because of power failures became a reality on Friday. ”Tens of millions of rands a day are being lost. It’s a nightmare,” said T-sec chief economist Mike Schussler. The JSE gold mining sub-sector closed almost 6% lower on Friday. The move contributed to the gold price rising.

President Thabo Mbeki’s announcement on Wednesday of a ”window of opportunity” for people convicted of alleged political offences before June 16 1999 has been warmly welcomed by most political parties. Pan Africanist Congress leader Motsoko Pheko hailed Mbeki’s announcement as an act of courage against odds.

Finance Minister Trevor Manuel’s 2007 Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement has received a cautious thumbs-up from some opposition parties. Tabling the budget in the National Assembly on Tuesday, he announced that almost R81,5-billion was to be added to the government’s projected spending over the next three years, bringing spending growth to 6,4% a year in real terms.

The Freedom Front Plus (FF+) and Louis Luyt’s minuscule Federal Alliance (FA) have amalgamated, party leaders announced on Friday. At the same time, Luyt also announced his retirement from active politics at the end of September. Luyt and FF+ leader Pieter Mulder agreed that greater cooperation between opposition parties was the only way to challenge the African National Congress.
