New Zealand coach John Bracewell believes his team can take heart from the way they pushed South Africa until the last over in the Pro20 match last Friday and the first MTN one-day international (ODI) in Durban on Sunday. South Africa on Wednesday unveiled a new policy to manage its swelling elephant population, including resuming a controversial cull of the animals if needed. Government experts have been pushing for a targeted slaughter of some of the country’s 20 000 elephants as well as a birth control programme to preserve land endangered by the voracious eaters.

Rain was the winner in the third MTN one-day international between South Africa and Pakistan at St George’s Park on Friday, when no play was possible in South Africa’s innings. Pakistan made 245 for eight in their rain-interrupted innings, but the sell-out crowd did not get to see whether South Africa would be able to chase down the runs.

Determined batting by Younis Khan and Kamran Akmal steered Pakistan to a five-wicket victory in the second Test against South Africa on Monday to level the series at 1-1. Younis was 67 not out with Kamran Akmal on 57, the pair adding 99 for the unbroken sixth wicket to pull Pakistan out of trouble to reach the victory target of 191 just before tea on day four.

South Africa were 25 for the loss of one wicket at tea on the second day of the second Castle Lager Test against Pakistan at St George’s Park on Saturday. They trail Pakistan by 116. South Africa finally managed to bowl Pakistan out for 265, but not before Inzamam Ul-Haq and tail-ender Mohammad Asif had frustrated them for an hour and a half, and put on 74 for the last wicket.
