Manuel fights for interdict in Cape court

Finance Minister Trevor Manuel should have considered asking for an apology rather than a gagging order against arms-deal activist Terry Crawford-Browne, the Cape High Court was told on Monday. Manuel is seeking an urgent interim order to stop Crawford-Browne from continuing to publicly accuse him of criminal conduct in signing loan agreements for the deal.

Bulawayo runs out of money

Service delivery has collapsed in Zimbabwe’s second largest city, Bulawayo, after local authorities recently announced that the municipality was insolvent and unable to cater to the needs of its almost two million residents. The council could not pay salaries in January and employees have been on a go-slow since then.

Cops find 34 petrol bombs in Delft

Police found 34 petrol bombs in the Precinct Six area of the N2 Gateway housing project in Delft outside Cape Town, Western Cape police said on Monday. ”Delft police were patrolling Precinct Six on Sunday and they found three plastic crates in a hole covered with a door,” spokesperson Superintendent Billy Jones said.

SA lifts moratorium on elephant culling

South Africa is to cull elephants for the first time since 1995, lifting a moratorium on the practice to bring ballooning populations under control, the government said on Monday. Since the government introduced a moratorium on culling in 1995, the number of elephants has risen from about 8 000 to over 20 000.

Fewer people smoking in SA, says WHO

Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang on Sunday welcomed a new World Health Organisation (WHO) tobacco report that indicates that consumption of cigarettes has declined in South Africa. The WHO report states that higher taxes are especially important for deterring tobacco use among the young and the poor.

Positive world markets buoy JSE

Firmer world markets helped keep the JSE in the black by midday on Monday, offsetting losses in the gold-mining index that were sparked by negative news from Gold Fields. Gold Fields’s share price weakened R2,81, or 2,43%, to R112,75 after it earlier reported that the current electricity crisis puts 6 900 Gold Fields jobs at risk.

After a pretty routine first half in which the Stormers, so magnificent in defence, had all but stolen a 10-0 lead over the Sharks in their Super 14 rugby match at Durban’s Absa Stadium, they gave away four late penalties to indiscipline and went down 12-10. It was a lesson in skill, speed and possession when the Blues outplayed the Lions 55-10 in a Super 14 match at Ellis Park on Saturday night. The early perception was that the Lions tried to stretch it just for the sake of stretching, with little structure to their forays.
