IFP welcomes decision to send Shaik back to prison

The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) on Friday welcomed Correctional Services Minister Ngconde Balfour’s order for Durban fraud convict Schabir Shaik to be removed from St Augustine’s Hospital and sent to Westville Prison. ”We welcome the news that Schabir Shaik is back behind bars, thus immediately ending his luxury hotel-like stay in hospital,” said IFP spokesperson Sybil Seaton.

Mbeki’s office informed of E Guinea coup, says witness

The office of President Thabo Mbeki was regularly informed about the progress of an alleged attempted coup in Equatorial Guinea, the Pretoria Regional Court heard on Monday. State witness Sean Abdinor, who arranged aviation logistics for the coup, told the court he was informed of this by alleged coup planner Simon Mann and his personal assistant, James Kershaw.

Leon queries Mbeki crime figures

Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Tony Leon has asked why the murder-conviction rate is so low if over 80% of murder victims in South Africa are killed by people they know. In his weekly newsletter published on Friday, Leon questioned what he called ”a dizzying series of statistics” contained in President Thabo Mbeki’s response on Thursday to the State of the Nation debate.

Mbeki calls for end to Palestinian sanctions

President Thabo Mbeki on Friday called for an end to all measures intended to isolate the Palestinian Authority and for the parties involved to renew their peace efforts. Writing in his weekly newsletter, Mbeki congratulated Saudi Arabian King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Hamas leader Khalid Mish’al for concluding last week’s Mecca agreement.

Four finance youth ministers will be in Parliament as guests of Finance Minister Trevor Manuel when he delivers his budget speech on Wednesday. They will attend a pre-budget function and will meet Manuel and Minster in the Presidency Essop Pahad, Johan Reiners of the South African Youth Ministers’ Programme said on Friday.

Australia’s 10-wicket loss to New Zealand in the first of the three-match Chappell-Hadlee one-day international (ODI) series in Wellington on Friday is South Africa’s gain. South Africa are now joint leaders in the International Cricket Council ODI standings, on 128 points with Australia. If Australia lose another match in the series, South Africa will be stand-alone leaders.

Third suspect arrested for Rattray murder

KwaZulu-Natal police have arrested a third person for the murder of historian David Rattray. The man was arrested on Thursday night, said Senior Superintendent Phindile Radebe. On February 5, Fethe Nkwanyana (23) was sentenced to 25 years in jail by Judge Jan Hugo in the Pietermaritzburg High Court after pleading guilty to the crime.

Limpopo safest province, says premier

Limpopo has the lowest crime levels in the country, Premier Sello Moloto has told the opening of the provincial legislature. He said this was according to a South African Institute of Race Relations study, Beeld newspaper reported on Friday. Although Moloto praised the police for their crime-combating efforts, he said there is still a shortage of staff.

Shaik goes back to jail

Minister of Correctional Services Ngconde Balfour on Thursday ordered that convicted Durban businessman and fraud convict Schabir Shaik be immediately removed from St Augustine’s Hospital in Durban and sent to Westville Prison. Balfour made the decision after viewing medical reports on Shaik’s condition. Shaik has been in Durban’s St Augustine’s Hospital for the past 83 days.

Economists welcome unchanged rates

The two-day meeting of the South African Reserve Bank’s monetary policy committee decided to maintain the repo rate at 9% on Thursday, in line with consensus expectations. Nedbank economist Magan Mistry commented: ”The unchanged stance is very much what the market had expected.”

WFP begins Mozambique flood-rescue operations

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has started rescue operations and food deliveries in central Mozambique where flooding has forced an estimated 85 000 to flee their homes, the organisation said on Thursday. The missions come as flood waters in the Mutarara, Caia and Marromeu districts near levels last seen during the catastrophic Mozambique floods of 2001.

Reserve Bank keeps rate steady, warns on spending

South Africa’s central bank held its repo rate steady at 9% on Thursday, in line with expectations, but warned that it would keep a close eye on rampant consumer spending. Reserve Bank Governor Tito Mboweni said the bank’s forecasts suggested the targeted CPIX (consumer price index excluding mortgage rate changes) inflation rate was no longer expected to breach the 3% to 6% target range.

Extra security for Boeremag accused

Increased security measures have been taken at Pretoria’s C-Max prison to prevent the Boeremag treason trial accused from escaping, the Pretoria High Court heard on Thursday. Correctional Services Minister Ngconde Balfour earlier this week applied for two previous court orders, dealing with the incarceration of 12 of the 22 Boeremag accused, to be set aside.

Lockout for strikers at Modikwa

A 48-hour lockout notice issued to striking miners at Modikwa Platinum mine in Limpopo is a management strategy to push for a settlement, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said on Thursday. R100-billion plan to power SA with nuclear plants

The Nuclear Energy Corporation of SA expects electricity generated from nuclear energy to increase by 25 000 megawatts by 2030, which could cost as much as R100-billion, media reports said on Thursday. To achieve this, the government would have to build about 24 pebble-bed modular nuclear reactors as well as 12 conventional nuclear power stations.
