Proteas take series lead

South Africa needed just 65 minutes and 14 overs as they demolished Pakistan by 10 wickets in the fourth MTN one-day international at Newlands on Sunday. After winning the toss and sending Pakistan in to bat, the Proteas put on a superb bowling display to bowl Pakistan out for the paltry total of 107 in the 46th over of the innings.

So close, but no Leopards victory

Leading 1-0 in the 85th minute with their opponents seemingly dead and buried under the strain of a 40-degree-Celsius Premier Soccer League scorcher, Black Leopards still went down 2-1 to Jomo Cosmos at Thohoyandou Stadium on Saturday afternoon. It was a familiar story of costly lapses in the Leopards defence.

Arrows take revenge on Chiefs

Lamontville Golden Arrows beat Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 in a fast, entertaining Premier Soccer League game played at the Oppenheimer Stadium in Orkney on Saturday afternoon. There was no score at half-time. It was sweet revenge for Arrows, who lost 2-1 in their own backyard earlier in the season.

Wits’ goal blitz ends losing streak

A two-minute blitz in which they scored twice within two minutes shortly after half-time helped Wits University beat AmaZulu 2-1 and end a three-game losing Premier Soccer League sequence at Johannesburg’s Bidvest Stadium on Saturday night. Also, Silver Stars beat Maritzburg United 1-0 in their own backyard.

Anti-TB drug shows toxic side-effects

A second-line drug treating extreme drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB) is having toxic side-effects on patients in KwaZulu-Natal, the South African Broadcasting Corporation reported on Saturday. XDR-TB is a deadly strain of the infectious disease that emerged in the Tugela Ferry region of KwaZulu-Natal in 2005.

The Stormers slumped to a humiliating 22-3 defeat to the Western Force in their Super 14 match at Newlands on Saturday night. Kobus van der Merwe and his side had spoken all week about improving on last week’s crushing loss to the Cheetahs, but this was an even worse setback on their home field.

Santos gain three points

A goal in each half gave Santos three valuble points when they beat Benoni United in a match played at the Athlone Stadium, Cape Town, on Friday. Rain throughout the match resulted in both sides slipping and sliding on the field. Santos were by far the leaders and easily stayed in the visitors’ half.

The Sharks register a second successive home victory in the Super 14 rugby championship at the Absa Stadium in Durban on Friday night as they beat the Waratahs 22-9. They landed four penalty goals and a drop goal to three penalty goals before scoring a try three minutes from the end.

Rain was the winner in the third MTN one-day international between South Africa and Pakistan at St George’s Park on Friday, when no play was possible in South Africa’s innings. Pakistan made 245 for eight in their rain-interrupted innings, but the sell-out crowd did not get to see whether South Africa would be able to chase down the runs.

Close family and friends of late African National Congress stalwart Adelaide Tambo started gathering at her home in Hyde Park, Johannesburg, on Saturday for a private valedictory service, media reports said. A procession was to leave her home later for Wattville Stadium on the East Rand, where thousands were expected to attend her funeral.

Helicopter crashes into pine trees in Durban

One person died and two were missing after a helicopter crash outside Durban on Friday night, KwaZulu-Natal police said. ”I saw it circle and then go down into the trees … There was a loud bang,” said witness Erinn Demsey. She had run out to her veranda when she heard the loud hum of the helicopter’s propellers.

Rabies claims yearling in Western Cape

An unstabled yearling has died of rabies in the Western Cape, the provincial agriculture department disclosed on Friday. It was the first rabies case in the area in 17 years, said provincial agriculture minister Cobus Dowry. Cautioning against alarm, he said it was probably an isolated case.

Durban school pupils who became nauseous and developed a pimple-like rash after playing on their sports field are to be tested for exposure to a toxic chemical, it was announced on Friday. The 36 affected pupils of the Alipore Road Primary School will undergo voluntary blood tests at the suggestion of the chemical company next door to their school.

More than 5 000 arrested at Zim border

More than 5 000 illegal immigrants have been arrested in a bid by police to curb crime along the South African/Zimbabwean border line, Limpopo police said on Friday. ”A total of 5 438 illegal foreigners were arrested at the border line in January,” said Superintendent Ronel Otto. A further 94 people were arrested and fined for aiding and transporting illegal immigrants.

Second Rattray murder accused appears

The second accused in the murder of KwaZulu-Natal historian David Rattray appeared briefly in the Dundee Magistrate’s Court on Friday. Simphiwe Ndlovu (25) was remanded in custody until February 20 for a pending bail application. The small courtroom was packed with curious locals and media representatives waiting to see the face of the accused for the first time.

Would-be robbers blew up an automated teller machine (ATM) in Welkom on Friday morning, but left empty-handed, Free State police said. Residents of Thabong told police of a white Toyota Cressida that had been driving up and down Nkoane Road, where a Standard Bank ATM was located, at about 1.40am.

Philander killer struck ‘like a snake’

The man found guilty of killing and raping the mother-in-law of celebrity Soli Philander was sentenced to two life terms by the Free State High Court on Friday. The judge told Simon Matshwane that were he to call him (Matshwane) a pig, he would be insulting pigs. ”Even pigs don’t do such things,” he said.
