SAA: Oil, currency volatility a big challenge

State-owned South African Airways (SAA) said on Tuesday its restructuring plan was on track but rising oil prices and a volatile exchange rate posed big challenges. The airline said last year it was seeking to save R638-million in labour costs in a bid to return to profitability and could shed more than 2 000 jobs as part of a restructuring exercise.

Business confidence dips further

The Business Confidence Index (BCI) declined slightly to 93,4 in April 2008 after measuring 93,9 in March, the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI) said on Wednesday. Although this was the lowest level so far in 2008, the pace of decline in the BCI appeared to have slowed, the SACCI said.

Outrage at proposed Eskom tariff hikes

Political parties and union leaders were outraged on Wednesday over Eskom’s proposed tariff hike of 53% and the devastating effect it would have on the country. The Congress of South African Trade Unions said it was absolutely horrified at the proposal and demanded an extended consultation process on Eskom’s latest plans.

Trade conditions out of negative territory

Trade conditions appear to be out of negative territory after the Trade Activity Index (TAI) increased for the third month in a row, the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry said on Thursday. The TAI, which measures the view of business on current trade activity, increased from 44 in December last year to 48 in January and 50 in February

Business confidence improves slightly

Business confidence recovered slightly in February with the index measuring 94, up from a four-year low of 93,8 in January, the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI) said on Wednesday. Although there was a slight improvement, SACCI warned that overall business conditions were likely to remain under pressure.
