SA faces ‘very real’ risk of recession

There is a ”very real” risk that South Africa could face an economic recession as a result of the current electricity crisis, the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Sacci) said on Wednesday. ”We have already been going through an economic slowdown; this [the electricity crisis] could push us into a recession,” Sacci economist Richard Downing said.

January business confidence dips

The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI) Business Confidence Index (BCI) dropped even further in January to 93,8 after measuring 94,8 in December 2007. SACCI said that apart from a single instance in April 2007 when the BCI flared up to 101,9, the index had been in a declining trend throughout 2007.

SA November manufacturing slows

Growth in South Africa’s manufacturing output volumes eased in the year to November, data showed on Thursday, but this might not sway the central bank’s next decision on interest rates later this month. Statistics South Africa said manufacturing output slowed to 4,4% year-on-year in volume from an upwardly revised 5,7% in October.

BCI reaches new low for 2007

South Africa’s Business Confidence Index (BCI) dropped to 94,8 in December 2007 after the BCI declined to 95,8 in November 2007, the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry said on Wednesday. The December 2007 figure is the lowest BCI level since November 2003 and a new low for 2007.

Business confidence at new low for 2007

The business confidence index (BCI), after dipping to 96,9 in October, dropped further to 95,8 in November, the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry said on Wednesday. ”The November 2007 BCI is the lowest level of the BCI since February 2004 and yet another new low for 2007,” the chamber said.

Business confidence dips in October

After bouncing back to 98,7 in October, the SACCI Business Confidence Index (BCI) dipped to 96,9 in October, which is its lowest level since June 2004. The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry said that businesses were becoming concerned about international economic developments as well as local adjustments.
