China has sanctioned state-owned companies to examine three possible strategies to block BHP Billiton’s proposed takeover of mining giant Rio Tinto, a report said Monday. Strategies include forming a domestic consortium to bid for Rio Tinto, a joint bid by domestic and foreign firms, or purchasing Rio shares on the open market.

A Dutch couple living in Hong Kong this week found themselves at the centre of an international controversy after they gave up their daughter for adoption seven years after they adopted her themselves. Raymond Poeteray (55) who has worked as a Dutch diplomat for more than 20 years, and his wife, Meta, adopted Jade, an ethnic Korean girl, when she was four months old.

A prison clerk in Hong Kong who dated inmates’ girlfriends by hacking into a computer to get their phone numbers has been sentenced to community service, a news report said on Saturday. Ng King-tong (30) used the computer system at the Lai Chi Kok jail to track down pretty female visitors and phone them for dates.

A woman threw herself into battle with a giant snake after it tried to strangle her pet dog to death, a Hong Kong newspaper reported on Sunday. Catherine Leonard was walking in a country park when the 4,5m-long Burmese python attacked her beloved Poppy.
