A tropical cyclone hit northern and central Mozambique on Saturday, destroying homes and cutting power lines, state media reported. Cyclone Jokwe lashed central Mozambique before hitting the northern coastal province of Nampula, travelling with winds of up to 130km/h, Radio Mozambique said. No casualties have been reported and the extent of the damage is not yet known.

At least 1 600 families have refused to abandon their flooded homes in the central Sofala province district of Machanga. Radio Mozambique said that authorities in the district — which is located near the Save River — had reported that the affected families were refusing to be relocated to higher ground.

Ninety-six miners were feared dead after a coal-mine gas blast in northern China on Thursday, a grim toll likely caused by illegal mining and possibly made worse by delays reporting the accident, the Xinhua news agency said. Rescuers had found 70 bodies in the village-run mine by early evening and were searching for at least 26 more.

At least 40 people were killed and 74 others trapped underground after an explosion at a coal mine in northern China on Thursday, with a group of rescuers among the missing, officials said. The gas blast occurred just after midnight at a mine in Linfen city, a coal-rich area in Shanxi province, the state administration of mine safety said.

Representatives from Sunni and Shia groups in Iraq agreed on a road map to peace based on the experience in Northern Ireland after four days of secret talks in Finland. The meeting brought together 16 delegates from the feuding groups to study lessons learned from successful peacemaking efforts in South Africa and Northern Ireland.
