SA women cricketers qualify for World Cup

South Africa Women have made it to next year’s International Cricket Council Women’s World Cup after hammering Ireland Women by seven wickets in the semifinals of the World Cup qualifier tournament in Stellenbosch. Ireland Women were skittled for 107 in 47.4 overs as the South African bowlers gave them no breathing space.

Govt slams school safety report as ‘hype’

A report by the South African Institute for Race Relations, which said South African schools were the most dangerous in the world, is ”media hype”, the Department of Education said on Wednesday. The report ”is evidence that this once-credible institution has fallen prey to a political agenda”, said department Director General Duncan Hindle.

SA schools ‘are downright dangerous’

South African schools are the most dangerous in the world, with only 23% of pupils saying they feel safe at school, the South African Institute of Race Relations (SAIRR) said on Tuesday. Spokesperson for SAIRR Thomas Blaser said a Progress in International Reading Literacy study had ranked South Africa last in terms of school safety.

SA well placed in hockey series against India

South Africa’s hockey women beat India 2-1 in the second Test at the Stellenbosch Hockey Stadium on Wednesday night to go two up in the four-match Spar Challenge series. South Africa won the first Test 2-1 on Tuesday night. The hosts could not have asked for a better start in the wintry Cape weather when they were awarded a penalty corner in the second minute.

Cape Cobras keep title hopes alive

As in their previous appearance at Stellenbosch, the Cape Cobras raced to victory well before the tea break on the third day of the SuperSport Series match against the Eagles. Although there was some resistance from the visitors, the home seamers dominated proceedings and they ensured that the Eagles left only the most nominal of targets.

Leon predicts up to 30% of vote for DA, IFP

Democratic Alliance leader Tony Leon spelled out on Tuesday the goals of his party’s ”Coalition for Change” with the Inkatha Freedom Party, and predicted the two parties would win up to 30% of the national vote on Election Day. ‘Pellet gun’ case postponed until 2004

Four Stellenbosch University students who allegedly shot seven women students with a pellet gun at the university in July this year had their case postponed in absentia on Monday to next year. the four students’ next appearance would be on February 2, 2004, when the jurisdiction of the case would be decided.
