A bomb in a market killed 17 people and wounded 27 in the northern Iraqi city of Tal Afar on Monday, local police said. Police in nearby Mosul said the blast was caused by a suicide attacker who blew himself up. Earlier on Monday, a suicide car bomber killed 13 people at a police recruitment centre in Iraq’s Sunni insurgent stronghold of Ramadi, west of Baghdad.

Iraqi and United States troops tightened their grip on the northern rebel stronghold of Tal Afar on Monday as insurgents wilted in the face of overwhelming firepower deployed by the 10 000-strong assault force, US commanders said. The 6 000 Iraqi and 4 000 US troops began an all-out offensive late last week.

Seventeen people were killed and 51 wounded a fresh onslaught overnight by United States and Iraqi forces on the town of Tall Afar in northern Iraq, a hospital official said on Thursday. The bombardments began at 2am (10pm GMT on Wednesday) and continued for seven hours, an AFP correspondent said.

A massive suicide car bomb that exploded outside a United States military base near the northern city of Mosul on Tuesday wounded 58 American soldiers and an Iraqi translator. An army spokesperson said 455kg of explosives had been packed into the vehicle.
