Oil set new record highs above a barrel on Tuesday as investors sought to hedge against a battered dollar. United States crude rose by ,80 to ,56 a barrel at 2.05pm GMT, after touching a record high of ,93. London Brent crude was up by ,91 at ,75, after a record high of ,85.

World oil traded near $97 a barrel in Asia on Friday, its highest level in a month, following the assassination of Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto, dealers said. They said the rise in prices was also supported by a United States report showing a higher-than-expected drop in US crude stockpiles.

Oil prices rebounded by over a barrel on Thursday, after an explosion and fire at an oil terminal in Minnesota shut down most of the main pipeline that delivers Canadian crude to United States Midwest refineries. US crude rose by ,11 to ,73 a barrel by 4.35am GMT, recouping some of the previous session’s loss of ,80, or 4%.

Oil prices fell more than a barrel on Monday as traders pocketed gains from the previous session’s record settlement. The release of eight Turkish soldiers by Kurdish rebels on Sunday also contributed to the decline, easing some concerns about whether Turkey will launch attacks on guerrilla bases in northern Iraq.

Oil prices resumed their climb on Friday after a decline in the previous session prompted new buying amid expectations that crude futures would continue to test new records because of tight supplies. Light, sweet crude for December delivery rose by 41 cents to ,90 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
