Wits let Chiefs off the hook

Kaizer Chiefs were let off the hook by Wits University at the Bidvest Stadium on Wednesday night while gaining only their third Premier League win in 17 games this season to vault four places into a flattering eighth position in the log. But, it must be concluded, the Wits side played distinctly dumb soccer and were their own worst enemies while going down 2-0.

At Wits, nostalgia and amnesia

Indeed, ”varsities are not islands of privilege” as Wits University vice-chancellor Loyiso Nongxa tells us (October 12). However, the ”success stories” of both Wits and the professor himself have prominently proved the contrary. This does not cease to amuse those who have been closely observing the university’s desperate search for vindication where there is none to be found, writes Motsoakgomo Nkoli.

With a script as strange and uncanny as that penned by a fiction writer, Orlando Pirates secured a frenzied 2-1 extra-time victory over SuperSport United in the SAA Supa8 semifinal at Durban’s King’s Park Stadium on Thursday night, with much-maligned coach Bibey Mutombo emerging the unlikely hero.

Coach brushes aside problems at Pirates

Looking at Bibey Mutombo on the soccer sidelines and the resemblance between the Orlando Pirates coach and the sphinx of ancient Egypt is almost uncanny. And even amid the despair and downright indignation among many in the Buccaneers camp over some insipid performances this season, the coach remains inscrutable.
