‘Morocco will back down’

It was a more confident Mohamed Abdelaziz who led the 11th congress of his Polisario Front last weekend, knowing that his exiled people have Morocco on the back foot. The North African kingdom has occupied the Western Sahara, which it invaded in 1975, in defiance of the international community.

Sanders to claim Lewis’s title

Corrie Sanders has set his sights on claiming the most prestigious heavyweight world title of them all. The former World Boxing Union and World Boxing Organisation heavyweight king has been in negotiations in London this week to set the platform for him to fight for the World Boxing Council’s version of the crown, currently held by Lennox Lewis.

United States President George W Bush this week sought, on a flying visit to Indonesia, to mend fences with the Islamic world but faced harsh criticism of his Iraq and Middle East policies when he met three of the country’s moderate Muslim leaders.

Athens, and the Olympic Games, is where Banyana Banyana and the men’s under-23 team would like to be next year. But to get there, Banyana need to go through gruelling elimination rounds, while Amaglug-glug have to come out tops in Group D, which also contains Algeria, Zambia and Ghana.

All Blacks secure quarterfinal berth

New Zealand became the first nation through to the quarterfinals with a 91-7 demolition of Tonga in Friday’s World Cup Pool B match at Suncorp Stadium. Caleb Ralph, Mils Muliaina and Doug Howlett scored two apiece as the All Blacks crossed for 13, while Leon MacDonald scored a try and landed a 12 conversions from 12 attempts for a 29-point haul.

From bad to worse

The Springbok second team fluffed its lines against Georgia at Aussie Stadium, but won a hard fought contest 46-19. With a number of places up for grabs in Rudolf Straeuli’s first choice 15, only the Bulls pair of flanker Danie Rossouw and flyhalf Derick Hougaard and Lions centre Jacque Fourie managed to rise above the general mediocrity.

Not all the Swazi king’s men

Of 17 Cabinet members appointed by King Mswati III, only one succeeded in winning a seat in the country’s House of Assembly. Not surprisingly it is difficult to pick an outright winner of the elections held in the enigmatic and troubled kingdom of Swaziland last weekend.
