Day three of the Rugby World Cup and the scores are getting bigger. As if to outshine France’s 61 points, New Zealand’s 70 and South Africa’s 72, England romped to an 84-6 crushing of rookie Georgia on Sunday. While the French and All Blacks can wait until later in the championship, that SA 72-6 result against Uruguay was a target for Clive Woodward’s men.

Substitute Nia Kuenzer scored in extra time on Sunday as Germany came from behind to win the Women’s World Cup for the first time after beating Sweden 2-1. Kuenzer headed in a free kick from Renate Lingor in the eighth minute of extra time, just beating Sweden goalkeeper Caroline Jonsson.

England are facing a scrum-half crisis after injuries to Matt Dawson and Kyran Bracken left them with just one fit No.9 ahead of Saturday’s World Cup crunch match against South Africa. Dawson suffered a bang to his leg while Bracken was replaced on the bench moments before kick-off in England’s 84-6 win over Georgia.

Nigerian sprinter Deji Aliu smashed the 10-second barrier to win the men’s 100m at the All-Africa Games in a sparkling time of 9,95 seconds in Abuja, Nigeria, on Sunday. Aliu’s new Games record was enough to hold off his Nigerian teammate Uchenna Emedolu, who took silver in 9,97.

South African athlete Frikkie van Zyl won a bronze medal during the All-Africa Games 110m hurdles final on Sunday. Van Zyl finished third in 13,94 in an event won by Joseph Randriamihaja of Madagascar in 13,77. Todd Matthews of Sudan was second in 13,81.

Moroka Swallows kept up their early challenge at the top of the Castle Premiership when they squeezed out a 1-0 win over hard-working Silver Stars in their fixture played at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday. The first half was evenly balanced but the Birds’ experience was the telling factor.
