Arsenal confident on keeping Wenger

English champions Arsenal believe Arsene Wenger will resist any approach by Real Madrid and sign an extension next month to his contract, which runs out in 2005. Negotiations to tie down the Gunners manager have been given greater urgency following Jose Antonio Camacho’s decision to resign at Real Madrid.

Getting SA rich won’t be quick

Because of the recovery of the economy over the past decade, the need for skilled labour has outstripped supply. Partly as a result of our employment equity policies, which have sound social objectives, the demand for skilled, black people has outstripped supply many times over. The growing salary gap caused by the demand for black professionals is unsustainable and threatens the economy, says Trevor Manuel.

England end losing streak against Aussies

England captain Michael Vaughan’s one-day international best score of 86 guided his team into the Champions Trophy final as they defeated world champions Australia by six wickets on Tuesday. England finished on 262 for four, ending a run of 14 straight one-day international defeats against Australia stretching back to 1999.

China gets ready for formula one

Sunday sees the first-ever Grand Prix being staged in China — but, by midweek there was little excitement ahead of the big day. But organisers are saying the race does not need heavy advertising. All 200 000 tickets for Sunday’s race have been sold at prices between 370 and 3700 yuan (R290 and R2 900).

Two percent of SA population arrested

Just more than a million people — about 2,2% of the population — were arrested in South Africa in the past financial year, 445 779 of them for serious and violent crimes, according to the South African Police Service’s annual report released this week. More than 2,1-million kilograms of dagga were seized.

Big warning for Big Brother contestants

They bathe together in a jacuzzi, tell intimate stories and compete for a one million kuna ( 650) prize. But the health minister has warned 12 contestants of Croatia’s Big Brother television show: stop smoking, or you’ll pay for it. The minister said on Tuesday that some of the players freely smoke during the show.

Ooh la la! Paris is not a nice place!

The relatively low ranking of Paris on a survey of quality of life in cities around the world for expatriate workers triggered bemusement in a leading French financial newspaper on Tuesday. Les Echos expressed surprise that the French capital ranked 31 out of 215 cities graded in the annual survey.
