Contrary to popular belief, Pelle Tornberg did not invent the free daily commuter newspaper. In fact the genial Swede actually recommended against producing such a title when he was president of Kinnevik Media in the early 1990s. Tornberg loved the concept pitched to him by two men from Sweden’s top-selling morning paper, but he figured Kinnevik had its hands full with radio and TV.

The vitriol Jacqueline Rose’ ideas have provoked is, perhaps, more startling than the ideas themselves. After Rose spoke on the winning side in a public debate on Zionism in January, British columnist Melanie Phillips — one of the speakers on the losing side — described her as one of ”hree Jewish persecutors of Israel who strutted their repellent stuff”.

South African Airways (SAA) has 30 days to pay a R45-million fine for contravening the Competition Act. This after the airline on Monday withdrew an appeal against a Competition Commission ruling that it had abused its dominant position in the domestic airline market. The fine is the largest in the history of the Competition Act .

A strong earthquake shook Central and East Africa on Monday, causing buildings to sway in at least six nations near its epicentre on the border between Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of Congo. No damage or injuries were immediately reported from the temblor that registered 7,5 on the Richter scale.

Women in developed countries may have crossed their legs at the sight of the Femidom, but their sisters in areas with high levels of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases are more appreciative.

Swimming sensation Roland Schoeman has rejected a multi-million dollar offer from the Gulf state of Qatar and opted to continue swimming for South Africa. Qatar, known for offering athletes lucrative packages to become adopted citizens, had approached Schoeman earlier this year but the Pretoria swimmer declined.
