Banking on new foundations

More than a year after launching the comprehensive plan on sustainable human settlements, aimed at eradicating slums, South Africa still has a backlog of 2,4-million houses. There are delays in the new housing plan, with most provinces yet to launch pilot projects. Malaria parasite develops a taste for new drug

Malaria parasites found in Africa are showing signs of resistance to the most powerful anti-malarial drug available, say researchers on the Science and Development Network website. Artemisinin was introduced in several African countries, including South Africa, after the parasite developed resistance to the commonly-used anti-malaria drug chloroquine.

Ready or not, here comes the NCS

Mixed reports are coming in about school and teacher readiness to implement the New Curriculum Statement (NCS) for grades 10 to 12 next year. While most agree that the NCS is an improvement on the old curriculum, poor teacher training and delays in the distribution of new learning materials for these grades have been identified as problematic.

For whom do the stars shine?

Lapels in Britain have for some weeks been festooned with red poppies to mark the end of World War I on November 11 1918. Poppies, because they were the first flowers to bloom from the battlefields of Flanders after the war ended. Red, folklore has it, because the soil was drenched with blood.

Rainbow? What rainbow?

Forty-two trapped in flooded mine in China

Forty-two miners were trapped for a second day on Sunday in a flooded mine in central China, as more than 200 rescuers raced against the clock to pump out water to save them, state media said. The miners have been trapped since shortly before midnight late on Friday when the Sigou mine suddenly flooded, according to the Xinhua news agency. The mine is located in Shisi township, Xin’an county, Henan province.

Time Warner girds for battle against raider

Time Warner is girding for battle with Carl Icahn as the billionaire corporate raider steps up his offensive against the world’s biggest media-entertainment company. Icahn, a financier who is one of the wealthiest Americans and has a history of hostile takeover moves, controls only about 2,8% of the shares of Time Warner with his partners.

Wenger lashes stumbling Gunners

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has savaged the performance of his players in a 2-0 defeat by Bolton that could have ended the Gunners’ chances of catching Chelsea in the Premiership title race. Wenger’s men slipped to fifth in the table and the 14-point gap between the two London clubs is beginning to look too big to close.

Cosmos win on penalties

Jomo Cosmos re-affirmed a South African football myth when they beat SuperSport United 4-1 on penalties to bag themselves the lucrative Coca-Cola Cup at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Saturday. Having beaten giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates en route to lifting the trophy, Cosmos proved a tad too strong over their opponents in the penalty shoot-out.
