John Lennon’s schoolbook to sell for £100 000

A schoolbook containing some of music legend John Lennon’s earliest thoughts, drawings and poems could be sold for £100 000 when it is auctioned later this month. The 10-page red exercise book, entitled My Anthology, dates back to when the ex-Beatle was just 12-years-old and includes an illustration of a walrus, from Lewis Carroll’s poem The Walrus and the Carpenter.

Smith decision still in the balance

A decision on whether injured Proteas captain Graeme Smith will play in the first Castle Test against New Zealand at SuperSport Park, Centurion, beginning on Saturday, will be taken after he bats in the nets on Thursday. Smith missed the third and final Test against Australia after injuring the ring finger of his left hand at fielding practice before the match.

DA calls for Scopa probe of justice department

The Democratic Alliance will ask Parliament’s public accounts committee (Scopa) to probe claims of ”massive underspending” in the justice department, DA spokesperson Sheila Camerer said on Tuesday. The Sunday Times reported that it had found that the officials conspired to conceal the underspending by making a series of irregular changes to the department’s books.

The hard-hitting left-hander struck a gritty 144 to help avoid the ignominy of a follow-on before the Australian bowlers struck crucial blows in Bangladesh’s second innings.

Negligence blamed in deadly trade show inferno

Angry locals on Tuesday accused authorities of negligence over a fire which engulfed a trade fair Meerut in India, killing 100 people and leaving survivors battling for their lives. Police used batons to drive back hundreds of distraught and angry residents who massed outside the cordoned-off fairgrounds where the blaze swept through crowded tents on Monday night.

Cosatu campaigns against WTO proposal

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) is launching a massive national and international campaign in opposition to a proposed agreement on Non-Agricultural Market Access (Nama) which is being vigorously pursued by the developed countries and the World Trade Organisation (WTO). "We will also be opposing the proposed further liberalisation of services through the WTO negotiations," the union said on Tuesday.

Premiership wages hit all-time high

Premiership players’ salaries have reached an all-time high after jumping by 65% since 2000, a new survey released on Tuesday revealed. The average top-flight player now earns £676 000 basic pay, a rise from the approximate £410 000 which clubs paid their stars six years ago.
